Each year, National Blood Donation Week reminds us of the incredible power of one simple act: donating blood. At South Arkansas Regional Hospital, we know firsthand the lifesaving impact these donations have on our patients, families, and community.
Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. From trauma patients and surgical procedures to individuals undergoing cancer treatment or managing chronic illnesses, donated blood is a lifeline. Despite this constant need, only a small percentage of eligible individuals donate each year. National Blood Donation Week shines a light on this gap and encourages us all to step forward.
When you give blood, you’re not just helping a stranger; you may be helping a neighbor, a friend, or even a loved one. SARH relies on a steady supply of blood to provide safe and effective care, whether in emergency situations or scheduled procedures. Each pint of blood donated can save up to three lives.
Most healthy adults can give blood. Common eligibility requirements include:
Being at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent in some states)
Weighing at least 110 pounds
Being in good general health on the day of donation
A brief screening process ensures safety for both donors and recipients.
During National Blood Donation Week—and all year long—we encourage community members to schedule an appointment at local blood drives or donation centers. Even one donation makes a difference. If you’ve never donated before, now is the perfect time to start.
At SARH, we’re proud to serve a community that comes together in times of need. National Blood Donation Week is not only about giving blood, it’s about celebrating compassion, generosity, and unity. By choosing to donate, you’re giving more than blood. You’re giving hope.
